메리골드는 왜성종인 프렌치메리골드와 고성종인 아프리칸 메리골드.

잎은 대생 또는 호생한다. 꽃은 6월부터 서리가 내릴 때까지 피며 꽃은 두상화로서 황금색에 가까운 적갈색 및 비로드같은 갈색이다. 꽃폭이 3~4cm이고 초장은 15~40cm정도로 자라며 파종 후 개화소요일수가 50~60일로 아프리칸매리골드보다 월등히 짧다.

•습도 -> 공중 습도는 보통으로 유지한다
•배양토 -> 노지화단에 심어서 관상, 밭흙, 부엽, 모래를 5:3:2의 비율로 혼합한다.
•번식 -> 실생으로 번식한다

3배체 메리골드
왜성종인 프렌치매리골드(Tagetes patula, French marigold, 공작초, 홍황초, 멕시코 원산)와 고 성종인 아프리칸매리골드(Tagetes erecta, African marigold, 만수국, 멕시코 원산)가 있다. 최근에는 아프리칸매리골드와 프렌치매리골드를 교배한 3배체 매리골드(Triploid Marigold) 품종이 나오고 있다.
아프리칸매리골드와 프렌치매리골드의 교배종으로 양자의 중간적 특성을 갖고 있다. 종자 발아율이 프렌치매리골드보다 낮으나 한여름의 고온기에 개화가 잘된다.

‘골든옐로’ ‘오렌지’ ‘옐로’ 등의 품종이 있다. 초장은 40~45cm이고 꽃 폭은 6~7.5cm 정도이다.
